How Music and Mindfulness Can Help You Heal After a Breakup

Breakups are brutal. There’s no way to sugarcoat it—when a relationship ends, it can feel like your whole world’s been turned upside down. If you’re in the middle of heartbreak, you’re not alone. The pain, the confusion, the way memories keep looping in your mind—it’s something so many of us go through, even if it feels like no one else could understand what you’re feeling.

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Breakups

Heartbreak is not simply sadness. It’s this hyper-emotional blend of sorrow, rage, yearning, perhaps some relief or flashes of hope. This is how one therapist summed it up: “You wish you could go back to how things were.”. You miss what you had, and you feel like your heart is breaking—because in a sense, it is.” You’re not only mourning the person, but the future you envisioned with them. That pain is real, and it cuts deep.

Why Healing Feels So Difficult

One of the reasons why breakups are so tough is that the person was a part of your daily life. “Everything about them is wrapped up in your nervous system. They were part of you, and you were part of them.” Naturally, therefore, you continue to think about texting them or fantasize about their response to something that occurs. Your mind, body, and habits need to unlearn a relationship that was once home. That type of change doesn’t occur overnight.

Music as a Powerful Tool for Recovery

Music isn’t necessarily background noise—it can aid you through heartbreak. A good playlist can guide you through the various phases of loss, allowing you to work through what you’re experiencing without making the journey rockier than it needs to be. When songs do a lot of emotional jumping around, it can be disconcerting. But when a playlist is compiled thoughtfully, it can get you where you’re going. “Hearing a certain song at the wrong time can set you back instead of advancing you.”

Music also makes you not feel so alone. When a song captures precisely how you’re feeling, it’s comforting to know that what you’re experiencing is something other people have experienced as well. “Just about everyone has experienced a broken heart.” And soon, as you listen to more songs about healing and strength, it begins to seem possible that you can make it through this, too.

The Importance of Processing Each Emotion

It’s human to desire to fast-forward through the hurt. You may want to divert, evade the heavy emotions, or attempt to bypass directly to okay. But healing is real when it involves confronting what is. “After a breakup, particularly early on, it’s so important to allow yourself to feel all of the emotions that come with mourning.” Music is a healthy means to reach those emotions, whether they are sadness, anger, or guarded hope, without becoming flooded.

Learning the Science of Heartbreak

Heartbreak isn’t only emotionally painful—physically, it takes a toll as well. “It hurts so deeply because that person became a part of your nervous system.” You built a life around them—it took a while to get into the rhythm of things, the way you thought, even the way your body reacted. So when they’re gone, your entire system has to reshape. That’s why it feels like dying, even though they’re still out there living their life.

Advice for Dealing with Grief’s Stages

You may get through all the relatable phases—denial, anger, bargaining, grief, and ultimately, acceptance. There will be days when you’ll be tempted to call out. There will be days you’ll think you’re finally alright, only to be jolted back by a memory, an odor, or a melody. “You feel it in every part of your body because you have to unlearn what it meant to be with them and re-learn how to live without them.”

Let yourself mourn. Don’t look at their social media or read messages from a long time ago—it just keeps you stuck. Instead, do tiny things to take care of yourself. Be kind to yourself. Your body and mind are in the process of learning a whole new way of moving through the world.

Finding Hope and Acceptance Through Sound and Self-Compassion

In time, the heartache won’t sting so bad. Music is a good reminder that you can heal. The right songs can get you in touch with the strength you never even knew you had. “Listening to songs about getting through hard times and picking yourself up can make you think you’ll make it through—and that you might just emerge stronger for it.

There isn’t a right way to heal. It’s not linear, and there’s no clock you need to keep. But with a little bit of kindness towards yourself, and a playlist that gets your trip, you’ll emerge from this. And on the flip side, you may find yourself at peace, strong, and even joyous again.
